FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the best way to clean upholstery?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to upholstery cleaning. The correct methods depend entirely on the fiber type, fabric construction and finish.

Some fabrics are unable to tolerate water, while others can’t be cleaned with dry-cleaning solvents. Without knowing exactly what fibers make up the fabric, it’s impossible to recommend a universal cleaning solution. That’s why understanding your specific fabric type— or consulting a fabric care professional— is so important.

How often should upholstery and floor coverings be professionally cleaned?

Carpet manufacturers often require professional cleaning every 12-18 months to maintain warranties. However, upholstery and rug cleaning frequency depends on use and lifestyle.

Different household factors can lead to shorter times between cleanings, including:

  • Kids
  • Pets
  • High traffic
  • Frequent spills

In busy households that have some or all the above factors, professional cleaning may be needed as often as every six months.

The most important rule when it comes to professional upholstery cleaning is not waiting until furniture looks heavily soiled. Cleaning is much easier and more effective when addressed early on.

What are the biggest upholstery cleaning dos and don'ts?

don't:

  • Don’t use home remedies like baking soda, dish soap, or internet “hacks”
  • Don’t assume water is safe to use on all fabrics
  • Don’t rely solely on care labels, because they aren’t always accurate

Using the wrong product or method can permanently damage fibers— especially on delicate fabrics or fabric blends.

do:

  • Vacuum regularly to remove dust and dry soil
  • Rotate and flip cushions monthly for even wear
  • Swap cushion positions when possible
  • Only use approved products designed for your specific fabric type

Routine care goes a long way in extending the life of your furniture.

What is the best couch fabric for dogs, cats and children?

Microsuede is an excellent fabric choice for active households.

Microsuedes are:

  • Extremely durable
  • Resistant to pet claws
  • Easy to clean
  • Cleanable with water

Because of their tight-knit construction, pet claws and little hands have nothing to grab onto and spills clean up more easily than with woven fabrics.

What is the best outdoor furniture fabric?

Solution-dyed performance fabrics such as Sunbrella are ideal for outdoor use. These fabrics are fade-resistant and water-tolerant, allowing them to look nice year-round.

Cleaning is simple with solution-dyed fabrics, since they can be spot-cleaned with a diluted bleach solution. When properly maintained, they will resist mold and mildew growth.

Like indoor upholstery, outdoor cushions should also be rotated and cleaned annually. Many homeowners choose to have them professionally cleaned and stored during the winter months.

What is the key to long-lasting furniture?

The basics matter the most when it comes to increasing the longevity of your furnishings.

  • Vacuum regularly
  • Rotate cushions
  • Damp dust
  • Address spills immediately
  • Fabric Protection is a plus

Consistent care is the key to preventing soils from embedding into fibers and dramatically extends your furniture life.

When is it safe to spot clean yourself, and when should you call a professional upholstery cleaner?

If you know the exact fiber content and are confident you are using the correct products and methods, light spot cleaning can be performed safely. However, if you’re unsure about fiber type, fabric sensitivity, proper cleaning agents or anything else, it’s always best to call a professional. Most damage happens when guessing is involved.

How does fabric protection work?

In short— fabric protection penetrates fibers and fills microscopic spaces where spills typically absorb. This means that spills stay closer to the surface, cleaning becomes easier and stains are less likely to set.

The visible “bead up” effect depends on fabric construction. Tightly woven fabrics may have more of a bead up effect than open weaves, but all fabric types benefit from easier stain removal.

What fabric type would you recommend for a sofa?

You should get any type of fabric that you truly love— because with fabric protection, care and maintenance, all fabrics can work well in any home.

However, there is one fabric type that you should try to avoid if possible: rayon.

Reasons rayon fabric should be avoided include:

  • They are 60-80% weaker when wet
  • They are extremely difficult to clean
  • Common spills can cause permanent damage

Even a small percentage of rayon fibers determines how the entire piece must be cleaned. When durability matters, it’s best to avoid this fiber type.

Rayon, viscose, banana silk, art silk, bamboo silk— the list of names goes on and on! Be sure to check labels and research diligently before purchasing a furnishing you suspect may be rayon.

What do you wish homeowners and designers knew before selecting a fabric?

Rayon is often chosen for its softness and luster. Although initially beautiful, rayon doesn’t hold up in real-life scenarios and is too delicate for most spaces in a home.

If you want a lustrous and luxurious look, silk or high-performance alternatives are much better alternatives. Rayon may look gorgeous in a fabric sample, but it’s one of the most problematic fibers once a single spill happens.

What's your final piece of advice for anyone who owns fine furnishings?

Enjoy what you own!

Furniture is meant to be lived on— not feared. Fabric protection exists so homeowners don’t have to worry about every spill or guest. With the right care and support, you can relax and enjoy the spaces you’ve invested in.

As Kurt reminds us, the goal has always been simple— beautiful furnishings without the stress.
